New Chinese Gastropub Kong to Open in Shoreditch
Andrew Wong, the chef behind the acclaimed two Michelin-starred restaurant A Wong, is collaborating with Amar Radia, co-founder of Dishoom, to introduce a new gastropub named Kong in Shoreditch. This establishment, referred to as a ‘Chinese public house,’ aims to offer high-quality Chinese cuisine in a pub setting. Although specific menu details are still under wraps, the duo has teased offerings such as ‘dumplings at dawn, noodles at lunch, and grills with a cold pint at dusk.’
Kong will be located in the Nolton Folgate development in Spitalfields, taking over the site of the former Water Poet pub, which closed in 2019 due to redevelopment. The concept is designed to honor the rich history of Chinese communities in the East End, which housed London’s original Chinatown from the 18th to mid-20th century.

While the exact opening date has not been announced, the developer's website suggests that Kong is expected to open in autumn. Updates can be followed on Kong's Instagram account.
Andrew Wong expressed that Kong will reflect their culinary identity, influenced by London, the East End, and their experiences at A Wong, describing the approach as ‘untraditional, instinctive, fearless, all-day cooking.’ Amar Radia added that Kong will celebrate the longstanding relationship between East London pubs and Chinese kitchens, aiming to create a welcoming atmosphere for all.
