Bangkok Launches 50th Food Bank Center to Aid the Needy

Bangkok has officially opened its 50th food bank center, located in the Saphan Sung district, marking a significant milestone in its efforts to combat food insecurity. City Governor Chadchart Sittipun presided over the opening ceremony, celebrating the achievement of establishing a food bank in each district of the city. The Bangkok Food Bank initiative, which began in October 2022, has already provided more than two million meals, equating to approximately 500,000 kilograms of food, to vulnerable populations across the city.

The food bank operates in a mini-market style, allowing recipients to select the items they need, which fosters dignity and choice. Governor Chadchart emphasized the importance of community trust in sustaining the project, stating that donors must be assured their contributions effectively reach those in need. He noted that the initiative has also played a crucial role in reducing food waste, as nearly half of all food produced is deemed surplus.

Chadchart highlighted the ongoing challenge of food access in Bangkok, where many residents still struggle to obtain proper nutrition. The food bank aims to serve as a central hub for redistributing surplus food and other essential items to those who require assistance.
