Thai Chef Jay Fai Fined After YouTuber Complains of Overpriced Dish

Jay Fai, the acclaimed chef behind the Michelin-starred restaurant in Bangkok, has found herself in a legal predicament after a YouTuber's complaint about an overpriced dish. On August 15, Peachii, a popular London-based Thai YouTuber, dined at Jay Fai's eatery and was shocked to receive a bill of 4,000 baht for a crab omelette, which was listed on the menu for 1,500 baht. The incident has sparked significant attention and led to a fine of 2,000 baht for the chef, who could also face jail time due to the nature of the complaint.

Peachii was invited to the restaurant by Dr. Pattarapha Chadit, a regular patron. During the meal, Jay Fai recognized Dr. Pattarapha and prepared the premium crab omelette without confirming the order with Peachii. Dr. Pattarapha later explained that the dish was a special preparation for familiar customers, which led to the misunderstanding.

The complaint gained traction on social media, prompting Thai Commerce Minister Jatuporn Buruspat to request an investigation by the Department of Internal Trade (DIT). Wittayakorn Maneenetr, the DIT's director-general, confirmed that Jay Fai had already paid the fine as of August 21, but investigations are ongoing to determine if the pricing was indeed excessive. In Thailand, overcharging can result in severe penalties, including a jail term of up to seven years or a fine of up to 140,000 baht.

Officials have instructed the restaurant to provide detailed information about the ingredients and pricing to assess the fairness of their charges. This incident highlights the challenges faced by high-profile chefs in balancing premium offerings with customer expectations and transparency in pricing.
