Tarra & Sura: A New Thai Culinary Experience in Chicago's River North
Tarra & Sura, a new culinary venture in Chicago's River North, opened its doors on August 19, 2026, under the guidance of restaurateur Michael Chen and executive chef Namo Chowcharoen. This dual-concept establishment offers a contemporary Thai dining experience on the ground floor, named Tarra, while the lower-level lounge, Sura, focuses on innovative cocktails and a future Thai snack menu.
Michael Chen's journey into Thai cuisine began during his time opening Kyuramen in 2023, where he frequently sought recommendations from his predominantly Thai staff. His growing passion for Thai food, combined with inspiration from modern Thai restaurants in New York City, led him to create a unique dining experience in Chicago, which he felt was lacking.

Chef Namo Chowcharoen, who hails from the Thai countryside near Bangkok, initially hesitated to join the project. However, after years of honing his skills and exploring Thai cuisine during the pandemic, he felt compelled to share his culinary heritage. "I want to introduce Thai food to this city beyond pad Thai and street food," he stated, emphasizing his desire to showcase authentic flavors.
The menu at Tarra is thoughtfully curated, divided into six sections that highlight the richness of Thai cuisine. The Amuse Bouche section features dishes like khao tang, a rice cracker topped with beef tartare and gold leaf, and kra thong tong, a squid ink tartlet with salted egg cream. Appetizers range from pla goong, a herbal shrimp salad, to curry pork and shrimp sausage skewers, each reflecting deep, traditional flavors.
Entrees include nam yap u, a Southern Thai crab curry, and hoi lai pad prik pow, stir-fried clams in a roasted chile cream sauce. Chowcharoen has collaborated with local Thai friends to ensure the authenticity of each dish, aiming to provide an experience reminiscent of dining in Thailand.
The beverage program, led by Robert Shamblin, emphasizes cocktails and wines that complement the food. The drinks are designed to enhance the dining experience without overshadowing the cuisine. Sura's cocktail menu features creative drinks that incorporate both modern and traditional techniques, ensuring a memorable experience.
The interior design of Tarra draws inspiration from its name, which means river in Thai. Water elements and earth tones are prevalent throughout the 95-seat space, creating a serene atmosphere. The dining area features a large tile mosaic depicting a wave, while Sura offers a contrasting ambiance with velvet couches and a sultry vibe.
Tarra & Sura is located at 121 W. Hubbard Street and is open Wednesday to Sunday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Reservations can be made through OpenTable, promising a unique addition to Chicago's vibrant dining scene.
