Plaza Khao Gaeng Expands to Borough Yards with Authentic Southern Thai Cuisine
Plaza Khao Gaeng has officially opened its second restaurant in Borough Yards, London, bringing its acclaimed Southern Thai cuisine to a new audience. Recognized with a Michelin Bib Gourmand, this new establishment is located beneath the historic arches of Stoney Street, following the success of its original site on Tottenham Court Road.
Co-founder Luke Farrell emphasizes the restaurant's identity, stating, "A railway arch feels like the right place for a Thai curry-rice joint—lively, fragrant, and close to the markets that inspire it." The menu reflects this philosophy, offering a curated selection of dishes from Thailand's southern provinces, which are often underrepresented in London. Diners can expect to find signature dishes such as soy-braised pork hock paired with gaeng som sour curry, an array of seafood curries, crisp whole fish, spicy stir-fries, and refreshing salads. Desserts maintain a balance of simplicity and flavor, featuring coconut pudding, palm sugar, and tropical fruits.

The restaurant's beverage offerings also draw inspiration from Southern Thailand, featuring a selection of cocktails that include rum, mango-infused tequila, and watermelon spirits, all enhanced with fresh herbs.
A unique aspect of Plaza Khao Gaeng is its commitment to sourcing fresh ingredients. Everything begins at Ryewater Nursery in Dorset, where Farrell grows essential Thai herbs and aromatics, including betel leaf, kaffir lime, wild turmeric, lemongrass, galangal, and various basils, ensuring that the kitchen is well-stocked with authentic flavors that define the menu.
The interior of the Borough Yards location is designed to create an atmospheric dining experience. Guests are welcomed into a bright and functional dining area centered around a custom-made Kha Muu cart. They then navigate a narrow alleyway under a blue tarpaulin canopy, reminiscent of Thailand’s bustling street markets, leading into the space that once housed a cinema. This design pays homage to Bangkok’s original Plaza cinema, blending 1970s character with modern stainless steel counters, fluorescent lighting, and an open kitchen.
With seating for 78 across various levels and passages, Plaza Khao Gaeng Borough Yards captures the essence of a traditional raan khao gaeng, encouraging communal dining with generous portions. This new addition to Borough Yards promises to continue the success story of Plaza Khao Gaeng, offering a deeply authentic dining experience that celebrates the rich culinary heritage of Southern Thailand.
